The WSL and Local Motion are working hard to bring the 2025 Surf Into Summer event back to Ala Moana Bowls as a combined amateur + professional competition. However, despite our ongoing and repeated appeals, the City Parks Department is limiting the 2025 Local Motion Surf Into Summer event to 4 consecutive competition days, with no waiting period.

This means Surf Into Summer is at risk of dropping off the WSL Hawai'i/Tahiti Nui Regional QS Tour. There is no way to run a combined amateur and professional event in 4 competition days.

The WSL and Local Motion originally requested exactly what was done successfully in 2023 and 2024: A combined amateur + professional permit, with the first 2 days for amateurs, followed by an 8-day holding period to run 4 professional (WSL) days, QS and longboard.

The City denied this application, citing their new surf event rule changes — not a specific penalty against the WSL or Local Motion. And the same rules allow for discretion in granting exceptions for the right cause, which we firmly believe this is.

We’re now asking for your help to preserve the full range of Surf Into Summer opportunities for amateurs and professionals, men and women, shortboard and longboard. We see no reason why ANY local surfers should miss out.

Mahalo for your support. By hearing from you directly, the City will hopefully better understand exactly what these events mean here in Hawai’i.
